Camel milk transformation into cheese remains an objective to be improved today. This study aimed to improve camel milk clotting using a crude extract from green pods of carob as a substitute for commercial rennet. The composition of the crude carob extract was determined for dry matter and protein content. Milk clotting conditions were studied at different temperatures, pH and CaCl2 concentrations. Milk clotting properties were assessed by milk clotting activity, specific activity and proteolytic activity. Enzymatic hydrolysis of camel milk caseins by crude carob extract and its inhibition were demonstrated by SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Crude carob extract analysis showed a protein and dry matter content of 23.26±0.5 mg/ml and 30.66±0.5 g/l, respectively. Optimal milk clotting activity was observed at 53.6 °C, pH 4.5, and 0.09 M CaCl2. The crude carob extract showed a high milk clotting activity (4.97 U/ml) and a low proteolytic activity (0.04U/ml) with camel milk. The cheese yield of curd produced from camel milk using crude carob extract was the highest (23.95%) compared with that of Camel chymosin (20.5%). The high ratio of milk-clotting to proteolytic activity shows the potential of this extract as a substitute for commercial rennet in the dairy industry.

This study aimed to investigate the influences of a dipping/coating composed of calcium chloride (CaCl2 ) or chitosan on the quality of ripe mango pieces during frozen storage for 6 months. The fruits were dipped in solutions with concentrations of 0.5% and 1% for different times (15 or 30 min for CaCl2 and 1 or 15 min for chitosan). We found that treatment with 1% CaCl2 for 30 min significantly retarded the color changes with the highest L* (p < 0.05) and the lowest of b* and ∆E (p ≥ 0.05). Interestingly, treatment with 0.5% CaCl2 for 30 min significantly preserved the contents of total phenolics and total flavonoids and the antioxidant activities at values higher than the control levels, as determined by DPPH and ABTS assays (p < 0.05). Moreover, treatment with 0.5%-1% chitosan for 1 min effectively delayed the loss of moisture and weight. The results indicate that dipping in CaCl2 is an alternative simple food processing technique for improving the quality of ripe mango pieces during frozen storage that effectively delays the color changes and preserves the antioxidant content and activity. HIGHLIGHTS: The coating of frozen ripe mango pieces with CaCl2 and chitosan was first investigated. CaCl2 effectively retarded the color change during storage and after thawing. Chitosan effectively delayed the loss of moisture and weight of mango pulp. Coating with 0.5% CaCl2 for 30 min maintained the phytochemicals and antioxidant activities. Coating treatment can preserve mango qualities and could be commercialized with cost savings. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: The present article proposes a strategy that effectively delays the physicochemical changes and preserves the nutritional properties of mango fruit and could be commercialized with cost savings. A frozen mango can either be consumed (ready-to-eat frozen mango) or used as a food raw material.

In this study, a high-throughput method for analyzing 300 pesticide residues in Radix Codonopsis and Angelica sinensis was established by liquid chromatography-quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometry (LC-Q-TOF/MS) using iron tetroxide loaded graphitized carbon black magnetic nanomaterial (GCB/Fe3O4) as the purification material. It was optimized that saturated salt water and 1 % acetate acetonitrile were used as the extraction solution, then the supernatant was purified with 2 g anhydrous CaCl2 and 300 mg GCB/Fe3O4. As a result, 300 pesticides in Radix Codonopsis and 260 in Angelica sinensis achieved satisfactory results. The limits of quantification of 91 % and 84 % of the pesticides in Radix Codonopsis and Angelica sinensis reached 10 µg/kg, respectively. The matrix-matched standard curves ranging from 10 to 200 µg/kg were established with correlation coefficients (R) above 0.99. The pesticides meeting SANTE/12682/2021 accounted for 91.3 %, 98.3 %, 100.0 % and 83.8 %, 97.3, 100.0 % of the total pesticides added in Radix Codonopsis and Angelica sinensis respectively, which were spiked at 10, 20,100 µg/kg. The technique was applied to screen 20 batches of Radix Codonopsis and Angelica sinensis. Five pesticides were detected, three of which were prohibited according to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia (2020 Edition). The experimental results showed that GCB/Fe3O4 coupled with anhydrous CaCl2 exhibited good adsorption performance and could be used for sample pretreatment of various pesticide residues in Radix Codonopsis and Angelica sinensis. Compared with the reported methods for determining pesticides in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the proposed method has the advantage of less time-consuming in the clean-up procedure. Furthermore, as a case study on root TCM, this approach may serve as a reference for other TCM.

Cashew apples, tropical pseudo fruit, are rich in bioactive compounds. It is still underutilized due to its high perishability and its astringent flavor. This study aims to extend its shelf life by chemical dip and dry method at the rural level. Inhibition of fruit-spoiling enzymes, such as polyphenol oxidase (PPO), peroxidase (POD), amylase, and cellulase, was a significant response in this method. Enzyme inhibition was carried out using chemicals: NaCl (1-10 mM), CaCl2 (1-10 mM), and ethylenediamine tetraacetic acid (0.1-1 mM). The effect of chemical concentration and dipping time was studied using a full factorial method at three levels (-1, 0, and 1). The dipping time ranged from 60 to 180 min, and chemical concentrations from 1 to 10 mM were studied. Optimal treatment conditions were obtained as follows: NaCl concentration of 9.45 mM, dipping time of 160 min, and CaCl2 concentration of 7.8 mM, dipping time of 160 min. NaCl pretreatment showed maximum inhibition of PPO (>80%) and POD (>80%), whereas CaCl2 pretreatment showed maximum inhibition of amylase (60.58%) and cellulase (80.23%). Hence, to avoid postharvest losses, pretreatment with NaCl and CaCl2 was adequate to preserve the texture and color of cashew apples. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Chemical pretreatment can prevent the postharvest losses of cashew apples. Inhibition of PPO, POD, amylase, and cellulase is vital in the shelf-life extension of cashew apples. Sodium chloride dip is a cost-effective method for increasing the storability of cashew apples.

The use of standard single-extraction procedures to evaluate the mobility and availability of trace elements is a common practice in most laboratories dealing with soil or sediment analysis. Most standard single-extraction procedures describe incubations last for 2 h. However, these were tested and validated for soil analysis. Applying them for sediment analysis without further investigation might be misleading and should be reviewed with care. This paper investigates the effect of incubation time on the extraction efficiency of three standard single-extracting reagents (0.01 M CaCl2, 1 M NH4NO3, and 0.05 M EDTA). Incubation experiments with sediment and soil samples lasting for 2 h, 10 h, and 10 d were performed. The results indicated that 2 h appears sufficient to reach equilibrium using CaCl2 or NH4NO3 for soil analysis; but when analyzing sediments, incubation for 10 d resulted in higher concentrations. Incubation experiments with 0.05 M EDTA showed that incubation for 2 h was enough to extract Cd from the soil sample, Mn and to a lesser extent Cd from the sediment samples; while for the other elements, incubation for 10 d yielded higher concentrations for both sample types compared to that obtained after 2 h and 10 h separately. Relative to the pseudo-total metal contents, more than 55% of all studied elements were extracted by using 0.05 M EDTA, indicating high bioavailable metal fraction.

This study evaluated preservatives to stabilize sodium chloride (NaCl)-free-cucumber fermentations. The brining of air-purged laboratory cucumber fermentations with 100.0 mM calcium chloride (CaCl2 ) and 25.0 mM acetic acid resulted in immediate rises in pH, the chemical reduction of the medium, and malodors. Supplementation with 3.0 mM sodium benzoate or 3.0 mM potassium sorbate enabled a decline in pH, a continuous oxidative state of the medium, and delayed rising pH spoilage. However, lactic and acetic acids eventually disappeared in fermentations supplemented with preservatives. The amount of preservatives needed to suppress growth of brined-cucumber-spoilage microbes was determined in Fermented Cucumber Juice Medium (FCJM). Supplementation of FCJM with 10.0 mM sodium benzoate was inhibitory for the spoilage yeasts, Issatchenkia occidentalis and Pichia manshurica, and the lactobacilli, Lentilactobacillus buchneri and Lentilactobacillus parafarraginis, but not of Zygosaccharomyces globiformis. Potassium sorbate inhibited the spoilage yeasts at 15.0 mM in FCJM but not the lactobacilli. Supplementation of FCJM with 20.0 mM fumaric acid had a bactericidal effect on the spoilage-associated lactobacilli. As expected, NaCl-free-commercial cucumber fermentations brined with 100 mM CaCl2 , no acetic acid, and 6 mM potassium sorbate resulted in complete fermentations, but supported rising pH, microbially induced spoilage during long-term storage. Post-fermentation supplementation with 12 mM sodium benzoate, 10 mM fumaric acid, a combination of the two, or 10 mM fumaric acid and 2 mM AITC prevented microbial activity during long-term bulk storage. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: Several preservative-based strategies for stabilizing NaCl-free cucumber fermentation in a commercial production setting were developed, enabling the implementation of a processing technology that reduces wastewater volumes and environmental impact.

Anthocyanins in processed fruit degrade significantly due to their heat and oxygen sensitivity and water solubility. Copigmentation for stabilizing anthocyanins is less effective for whole fruit due to anthocyanins' location within cell vacuoles surrounded by the epicarp layer as barrier to prevent copigment complexing with anthocyanins. This study investigated strategies for enhancing anthocyanin-phenolic copigmentation on blueberry surface, and integrated copigmentation with layer-by-layer (LBL) coating to retain anthocyanin stability in thermally processed blueberries. Results indicated that epicarp layer treatment of fruit by Tween 80 (T80) and CaCl2 is important for enhancing anthocyanin-phenolic copigmentation. The sequential copigmentation treatment using T80, ferulic acid, and CaCl2 (T80→FA→CaCl2 ) or T80, tannic acid, and CaCl2 (T80→TA→CaCl2 ) resulted in higher (p < 0.05) retention of total monomeric anthocyanin (3.18 mg/g and 3.38 mg/g, respectively) in thermally processed blueberries after 7-day ambient storage than that of untreated fruit (2.79 mg/g). Percent polymeric color (PPC) of blueberries treated by T80→FA→CaCl2 (15.5%) or T80→TA→CaCl2 (17.4%) was lower (p < 0.05) than that treated by TA alone (22.5%). The LBL coating enhanced microstructure stability for preserving anthocyanins in thermally processed blueberries. This study demonstrated the effectiveness of sequential copigmentation of blueberries after epicarp layer treatment followed by LBL coating for enhancing anthocyanin stability in processed whole fruit. PRACTICAL APPLICATION: When anthocyanin-rich fruit is thermally processed, anthocyanins degrade and leach to aqueous packing solution because of its heat sensitivity and water solubility. This study developed an innovative technology through implementing sequential treatments of copigmentation and water- and heat-resistant coating for preventing heat and water degradation of anthocyanins in whole fruit during processing in aqueous media. The developed technology can be practically applied to enhance the quality and health benefits of thermally processed anthocyanin-rich whole fruit. The technology can not only be utilized to improve existing fruit products, but also develop new and novel fruit products.

High-latitude urban regions provide a unique and complex range of environmental surfaces for uptake of trace pollutant gases, including winter road maintenance materials (e.g., gravel, rock salts, and anti-icer, a saline solution applied to roads during winter). In an effort to reduce the negative environmental and economic impacts of road salts, many municipalities have turned to agro-based anti-icing materials that are rich in organic material. To date, the reactivity of both anti-icer and saline road dust with pollutant gases remain unexplored, which limits our ability to assess the potential impacts of these materials on air quality in high-latitude regions. Here, we used a coated-wall flow tube to investigate the uptake of ozone, an important air pollutant, by road dust collected in Edmonton, Canada. At 25% relative humidity (RH) and 50 ppb ozone, γBET for ozone uptake by this sample is (8.0 ± 0.7) × 10-8 under dark conditions and (2.1 ± 0.1) × 10-7 under illuminated conditions. These values are 2-4× higher than those previously obtained by our group for natural mineral dusts, but are not large enough for suspended road dust to influence local ozone mixing ratios. In a separate set of experiments, we also investigated the uptake of ozone by calcium chloride (i.e., road salt) and commercial anti-icer solution. Although ozone uptake by pure calcium chloride was negligible, ozone uptake by anti-icer was significant, which implies that the reactivity of anti-icer is conferred by its organic content. Importantly, ozone uptake by anti-icer-and, to a lesser extent, road dust doped with anti-icer-leads to the release of inorganic chlorine gas, which we collected using inline reductive trapping and quantified using ion chromatography. To explain these results, we propose a novel pathway for chlorine activation: here, ozone oxidation of the anti-icer organic fraction (in this case, molasses) yields reactive OH radicals that can oxidize chloride. In summary, this study demonstrates the ability of road dust and anti-icer to influence atmospheric oxidant mixing ratios in cold-climate urban areas, and highlights previously unidentified air quality impacts of winter road maintenance decisions.

Hot water treatment (HT) induces chilling injury (CI) tolerance in mango, but prolonged exposure to HT causes softening. In this sense, calcium salts stabilize the cell wall. Nevertheless, there is little information on the effect of HT combined with calcium salts (HT-Ca) on calcium absorption and cell wall stability during storage of mango at CI temperature. We evaluated the effect of quarantine HT in combination with calcium chloride (CaCl2 ), calcium citrate (CaCit), or calcium lactate (CaLac) on calcium absorption, CI tolerance, and cell wall stabilization. HT and HT-CaCl2 had the lowest CI development. HT increased firmness loss and electrolyte leakage, and HT-Ca counteracted this effect. Overall, HT-Ca treatments had a similar effect on the cell wall degrading enzymes. HT-CaCl2 was the best treatment and did not present alterations on the epicuticular wax as observed on HT. HT-CaCl2 is a useful technology to stabilize cell wall and preserve mango during chilling storage. PRACTICAL APPLICATIONS: The addition of calcium salts in an established hot water quarantine procedure for mango exportation represents a viable alternative to counteract the negative effects of this thermal treatment upon cell microstructure, maintaining its positive effect of tolerance to chilling injury. In this sense, mango producers and packers can use a HT-CaCl2 treatment to reduce the presence of chilling injury and extent the fruit shelf life and improve its commercialization. Furthermore, technical and infrastructure changes are not necessary for the packaging chain.

This study investigated the ability of É£-proteobacteria, indigenous to fresh cucumber, to grow in the expressed fruit juice (CJM) and fermentation. It was hypothesized that fresh cucumbers can support prolific growth of É£-proteobacteria but that the cover brine composition and acid production by the competing lactobacilli in the fermentation of the fruit act as inhibitory agents. The É£-proteobacteria proliferated in CJM with an average maximum growth rate (µmax) of 0.3895 ± 0.0929 and doubling time (Td) of 1.885 ± 0.465/h. A significant difference was found between the É£-proteobacteria µmax and Td relative to Lactiplantibacillus pentosus LA0445 (0.2319 ± 0.019; 2.89/h) and Levilactobacillus brevis 7.2.43 (0.221 ± 0.015; 3.35/h) but not Lactiplantibacillus plantarum 3.2.8 (0.412 ± 0.119; 1.87/h). While inoculation level insignificantly altered the µmax and Td of the bacteria tested; it impacted the length of lag and stationary phases for the lactobacilli. Unlike the lactobacilli, the É£-proteobacteria were inhibited in CJM supplemented with a low salt fermentation cover brine containing calcium chloride, acetic acid and potassium sorbate. The É£-proteobacteria, P. agglomerans, was unable to proliferate in cucumber fermentations brined with calcium chloride at a pH of 6.0 ± 0.1 and the population of Enterobacteriaceae was outcompeted by the lactobacilli within 36 h. Together these observations demonstrate that the prolific growth of É£-proteobacteria in CJM is not replicated in cucumber fermentation. While the É£-proteobacteria growth rate is faster that most lactobacilli in CJM, their growth in cucumber fermentation is prevented by the cover brine and the acid produced by the indigenous lactobacilli. Thus, the lactobacilli indigenous to cucumber and cover brine composition influence the safety and quality of fermented cucumbers. IMPORTANCE While the abundance of specific É£-proteobacteria species varies among vegetable type, several harbor Enterobacteriaceae and Pseudomonadaceae that benefit the plant system. It is documented that such bacterial populations decrease in density early in vegetable fermentations. Consequently, it is assumed that they do not contribute to the quality of finished products. This study explored the viability of É£-proteobacteria in CJM, used as a model system, CJM supplemented with fermentation cover brine and cucumber fermentation, which are characterized by an extremely acidic endpoint pH (3.23 ± 0.17; n = 391). The data presented demonstrates that fresh cucumbers provide the nutrients needed by É£-proteobacteria to proliferate and reduce pH to 4.47 ± 0.12. However, É£-proteobacteria are unable to proliferate in cucumber fermentation. Control of É£-proteobacteria in fermentations depends on the cover brine constituents and the indigenous competing lactobacilli. This knowledge is of importance when developing guidelines for the safe fermentation of vegetables, particularly with low salt.

Soil microorganisms were sensitive to heavy metal pollution, whose ecological effect on soil microbial community was impacted by the interaction of contaminated stresses and environmental factors. To explore the dominant factors governing those effects in heavy metal contaminated soil, field investigation was conducted for soil from different land use types in an area surrounding a typical mining smelter in Hunan Province. Soil microbial function parameters including microbial biomass carbon (MBC), basal respiration (BR), substrate-induced respiration (SIR) and nitrification potential (PNR) were used as measure endpoints for ecological effect to reflect soil carbon and nitrogen cycling. The results showed that the effect of land use on MBC, BR, and SIR was insignificant. The dominant impacting factors on microbial functions included CaCl2 extracted Pb (CaCl2-Pb) and soil organic matter (SOM) content. Results of multiple regression analysis showed that soil CaCl2-Pb and SOM together explained 39.8%-58.3% of the total variations of BR, SIR and PNR in soil, when CaCl2-Pb and SOM ranged in 0.004-13.14 mg·kg-1 and 0.24%-4.34%, respectively. Significantly quantitative exposure-effect equations were developed between the responses of soil BR, SIR and PNR and soil CaCl2-Pb and SOM when soil samples with medium contents (namely, SOM 1.70%~2.36% and CaCl2-Pb 0.004-12.98 mg·kg-1), which meant they could be used to quantitatively assess the ecological effect of heavy metals on microbial community function as measure endpoints.

BACKGROUND: Parenteral nutrition(PN) solutions containing calcium gluconate and cysteine have elevated particle counts when analyzed using laser light obscuration (LO) as recommended by the United States Pharmacopeia. It is unclear whether increased particle formation in these solutions results in decreased availability of cysteine to neonatal patients due to filtration. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to measure cysteine concentrations in neonatal PN solutions before and after filtration as well as analyze precipitates on filters. METHODS: Solutions of PN containing amino acids with and without cysteine that were compounded with calcium chloride or calcium gluconate plus potassium phosphate were analyzed using LO. Concentrations of cysteine were measured before and after filtration. The effect on particle formation of magnesium sulfate (MgSO4 ) and D70 was also evaluated. RESULTS: Multiple additives including the specific calcium or D70 additive, cysteine, and MgSO4 influenced particle formation of particles detected using LO. There was no significant decrease in cysteine concentration because of filtering and there was no difference in the amount of calcium on filters of various solutions after filtration regardless of LO particle counts. Scanning electron micrographic (SEM) analysis found no significant differences in crystal composition. Light microscopic and SEM examination did not show evidence of high particle counts on filters. CONCLUSION: The increased particle counts detected in neonatal PN solutions containing cysteine added at the time of compounding does not appear to result in increased precipitate or crystal formation. It is not associated witha decrease in cysteine delivery to patients.

OBJECTIVE: Vascular calcification (VC) is one major complication in patients with chronic kidney disease, with a misbalance in calcium and phosphate metabolism playing crucial role. The mechanisms underlying VC have not been entirely revealed to date. As studies aiming at the identification and characterization of the involved mediators are highly relevant, we developed a standardized operating protocol for in vitro and ex vivo approaches in this study to aiming at the comparability of these studies. APPROACH AND RESULTS: We analyzed in vitro and ex vivo experimental conditions to study VC. Therefore, vascular smooth muscle cells were used for in vitro experiments and rat aorta for ex vivo experiments. The degree of calcification was estimated by quantification of calcium concentrations and by von Kossa staining. As a result, a step-by-step protocol for performing experiments on VC was established. We were able to demonstrate that the degree and the location of VC in vascular smooth muscle cells and aortic rings was highly dependent on the phosphate and CaCl2 concentration in the medium as well as the incubation time. Furthermore, the VC was reduced upon increasing fetal calf serum concentration in the medium. CONCLUSION: In the current study, we developed and validated a standardized operating protocol for systematic in vitro and ex vivo analyses of medial calcification, which is essential for the comparability of the results of future studies.

BACKGROUND: Calcium treatment plays an important role in regulative physiological functions in fruits and vegetables after harvest that is protected many horticulture products postharvest quality during storage life. The effects of 2% calcium chloride (CaCl2 ) and 1% starch + 2% glycerin on the physiological, biochemical, and quality responses of the Kadirli radish variety were investigated. RESULTS: Whole leafless radishes were stored in 10 kg modified-atmosphere packages at 90% relative humidity conditions at 4 °C for 56 days. Significant differences were observed in radish treated with 2% CaCl2 and coating with 1% starch + 2% glycerin compared with the control. There were significant effects of the application of CaCl2 either alone or in combination with a coating on radish with regard to the firmness and the important physiological disorder of hollowing ratio percentage and cell membrane (malondialdehyde) aging level of the fresh whole radish. CONCLUSION: The application of CaCl2 alone and in combination with coating protected the physical, chemical, and microbiological quality characteristics of radish and prolonged the shelf-life quality of fresh radish. © 2020 Society of Chemical Industry.

AIMS: Differences in the bacterial population of cucumber fermentations brined with no salt, 100 mmol l-1 (1·1%) calcium chloride (CaCl2 ) or 1·03 mol l-1 (6%) sodium chloride (NaCl) were studied. METHODS AND RESULTS: Changes in the microbiology and chemistry of commercial and laboratory scale cucumber fermentations occurring as a function of time were monitored using colony counts and metagenetic analysis, and a pH probe and high-performance liquid chromatography analysis respectively. Dissolved oxygen and carbon dioxide content were monitored in commercial fermentations. Fermentations brined with calcium chloride (CaCl2 ) or no salt sustained faster microbial growth and reduction in pH than those brined with 1·03 mol l-1 NaCl. Leuconostoc, Lactococcus and Weissella dominated in fermentations brined with no salt or 100 mmol l-1 CaCl2 on day 1 as compared to Weissella and enterobacteria in fermentations containing 1·03 mol l-1 NaCl. Lactobacilli dominated all fermentations by the third day, regardless of salt type, and was followed, in relative abundance by Pediococcus, Leuconostoc, Lactococcus and Weissella. From 84 to 96% of the population was composed of Lactobacillus by day 7 of the fermentations, except in the no salt fermentations in which a mixed population of LAB remained. The population of LAB found in commercial cucumber fermentations brined with 100 mmol l-1 CaCl2 (n = 18) or 1·03 mol l-1 NaCl (n = 9) mimicked that of laboratory fermentations. A declining population of aerobes was detected in commercial fermentations brined with CaCl2 on day 1. CONCLUSION: A reduced NaCl content in cucumber fermentation enhances microbial diversity. SIGNIFICANCE AND IMPACT OF THE STUDY: This study fills a knowledge gap and aids in the design of improved reduced NaCl cucumber fermentations.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of the partial replacement of NaCl by blends of KCl and CaCl2 on the physicochemical, microbiological, and sensory properties of jerked beef. For that, in the dry and wet salting stages, 50% NaCl of the control treatment (FC1) was replaced by 50% KCl (F1), 50% CaCl2 (F2), and a blend containing 25% KCl and 25% CaCl2 (F3) at equivalent concentrations based on the ionic strength. All reformulated treatments presented a significant sodium reduction when compared to the control (27.57% F1, 41.59% F2, and 36.74% F3). The CaCl2 blends resulted in final products with bitter taste and rancid aroma accompanied by a higher TBARS and shear force and lower a* values (P < .05). The substitute salts did not affect the microbiological stability (P > .05). The present results demonstrate that adding 50% KCl may be a good strategy to reduce sodium in jerked beef.

Orchiectomized bulls have advantages in the meat quality and ease of handling. Chemical castration is an option for surgical castration and the sclerosing agents can be administered into the testicular or epididymis parenchyma. These agents have a lower incidence of complications than surgery, especially when associated with dimethylsulfoxide (DMSO), which has anti-inflammatory action and increases the absorption of other drugs. Thus, this study aimed to evaluate the effect of a single intratesticular injection of calcium chloride solution associated with DMSO for the chemical sterilization of bulls. Twenty-four young adult bulls were utilized, distributed into 3 groups (G20, G30 and G40, n = 8/group), according to the calcium chloride concentration (20, 30 and 40%), in 10mL volume. Serum concentrations of testosterone, body weight, testicular volume and ecotexture, clinical signs and behavior and were evaluated for 45 days. Thus, the animals were orchiectomized and testicles were assessed histologically. There were no changes in body weight, decreased serum testosterone concentrations (except G30), signs of scrotal sensitivity or changes in behavior over the period. However, there was significant increase in testicular volume, especially on the 2nd and 3rd day after treatment, with values returning to the value initials at 15 days. Testicular adherence and firm consistency were observed during orchiectomy. Ultrasound examination revealed a loss of integrity of the median raphe, with cavity formation and an alteration of the testicular echotexture. In the histological evaluation, coagulation necrosis of seminiferous tubules and interstitial cells was observed, mainly in the medial portion in all groups. Some animals presented total absence of tubular formations in all the studied groups, being the effects of greater intensity in the G40. Additionally, pronounced edema was noted in all groups, especially in G40. Inflammatory infiltrate, fibroplasia and neovascularization were found to be predominantly discrete. Based on the conditions used in this study, we conclude that calcium chloride associated with DMSO can be used as a method of chemical sterilization in bovines.(AU)


Bovinos orquiectomizados apresentam vantagens na qualidade da carne e facilidade no manejo. A quimioesterilização é uma opção à castração cirúrgica e os agentes esclerosantes podem ser administrados no parênquima testicular ou epidídimo. Estes produtos possuem menor incidência de complicações, comparados a cirurgia, especialmente quando associados ao dimetilsulfóxido (DMSO), que apresenta ação anti-inflamatória e aumenta a absorção de outros fármacos. Assim, este estudo teve como objetivo avaliar o efeito de uma única injeção intratesticular de solução de cloreto de cálcio associado com 0,5% de DMSO para a esterilização química de bovinos. Vinte e quatro touros adultos jovens foram utilizados, distribuídos em 3 grupos (G20, G30 e G40, n = 8/grupo) de acordo com a concentração de cloreto de cálcio (20, 30 e 40%), em um volume de 10mL. Foram avaliadas as concentrações séricas de testosterona, peso corporal, volume e ecotextura testicular, sinais clínicos e comportamento por 45 dias. A seguir, os animais foram submetidos à orquiectomia e os testículos avaliados histologicamente. Não foram observadas alterações do peso corporal, diminuição das concentrações de testosterona sérica (exceto no G30), sinais de sensibilidade escrotal ou alterações no comportamento no período avaliado. Porém, houve aumento significativo do volume testicular, especialmente nos 2º e 3º dia após o tratamento, com valores retornando aos iniciais aos 15 dias. Aderência e consistência firme dos testículos foram achados observados durante a orquiectomia. O exame ultrassonográfico revelou perda de integridade da rafe mediana, com formação de cavidades e alteração da ecotextura testicular. Na avaliação histológica, verificou-se necrose de coagulação de túbulos seminíferos e células intersticiais acentuada, principalmente, na porção medial em todos os grupos, sendo que em alguns animais havia ausência total das formações tubulares em todos os grupos estudados, sendo os efeitos de maior intensidade no G40. Além disso, edema foi acentuado em todos os grupos, principalmente em G40. Infiltrado inflamatório, fibroplasia e neovascularização foram achados predominantemente discretos. Com base nas condições utilizadas neste estudo, conclui-se que o cloreto de cálcio associado com o DMSO pode ser utilizado como um método de esterilização química em bovinos.(AU)

BACKGROUND: The preharvest application of Ca-containing foliar fertilizers can reduce the incidence of bitter pit (BP) in apples and improve fruit quality by increasing the Ca content and decreasing both the N content and the N/Ca ratio in fruits. In this study, we aimed to investigate the control efficacy of Ca-containing fertilizers on the incidence of BP and their effects on the Ca and N contents in bagged 'Fuji' apples by spraying foliar fertilizer containing calcium chloride (CaCl2 ), calcium nitrate [Ca(NO3 )2 ] or calcium formate [Ca(HCOO)2 ] at an early stage, five days after full bloom (DAFB) and 40 DAFB, and at a late stage, 80 DAFB and 125 DAFB. RESULTS: The incidences of BP were reduced significantly by 43.2-73.0%, and the efficacy of spraying at an early stage was significantly higher than that of spraying at a late stage. The Ca content of bagged apple fruits increased whereas the N content and N/Ca ratio decreased after spraying Ca-containing foliar fertilizers; however, the Ca content, N content and N/Ca ratio of apple leaves were differentially influenced. CONCLUSION: Foliar fertilizer containing CaCl2, Ca(NO3 )2 or Ca(HCOO)2 can be used at an early stage to control BP in apple and improve the quality of bagged apple fruits. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.

There are no compatibility studies for neonatal parenteral nutrition solutions without cysteine containing calcium chloride or calcium gluconate using light obscuration as recommended by the United States Pharmacopeia (USP). The purpose of this study was to do compatibility testing for solutions containing calcium chloride and calcium gluconate without cysteine. Solutions of TrophAmine and Premasol (2.5% amino acids), containing calcium chloride or calcium gluconate were compounded without cysteine. Solutions were analyzed for particle counts using light obscuration. Maximum concentrations tested were 15 mmol/L of calcium and 12.5 mmol/L of phosphate. If the average particle count of three replicates exceeded USP guidelines, the solution was determined to be incompatible. This study found that 12.5 and 10 mmol/L of calcium and phosphate, respectively, are compatible in neonatal parenteral nutrition solutions compounded with 2.5% amino acids of either TrophAmine or Premasol. There did not appear to be significant differences in compatibility for solutions containing TrophAmine or Premasol when solutions were compounded with either CaCl2 or CaGlu-Pl. This study presents data in order to evaluate options for adding calcium and phosphate to neonatal parenteral nutrition solutions during shortages of calcium and cysteine.

BACKGROUND: Red raspberries are a delicate and highly perishable fruit with a fragile pulp tissue. In this study we used vacuum impregnation (VI) methods to incorporate pectin and calcium chloride into whole red raspberries to improve their firmness. Specifically, we impregnated low methoxyl pectin (LMP) at 10 g of pectin kg-1 of solution and calcium chloride (CaCl2 ·2H2 O) at 30 g calcium kg-1 of pectin, and on the other side pectin methylesterase (PME) at 10 g of enzyme kg-1 of solution, and (CaCl2 ·2H2 O) at 10 g of calcium kg-1 of solution, into whole red raspberries. We tested three vacuum levels 33.9, 50.8, and 67.8 kPa, three vacuum impregnation times 2, 7, and 15 min, and two temperatures, 20 and 40 °C, during VI treatment. Maximum force (FM ) and gradient (GC3 ) were evaluated to assess raspberry firmness. RESULTS: A vacuum level of 50.8 kPa, processing time of 7 min, and a LMP and calcium infusion at 20 °C resulted in the firmest fruit compared to the other treatments. At these VI treatment conditions, FM and GC3 values of red raspberries obtained were 28 N, and 8.4 N mm-1 , respectively. CONCLUSION: The optimal VI conditions identified in this study can be used to improve firmness and structural integrity of red raspberries by infusion of LMP and calcium. Findings on vacuum-impregnated red raspberries may be used to develop dehydrofrozen berries for incorporation into bakery and dairy products. © 2018 Society of Chemical Industry.
